10月なって内地(本州)は寒くなってきたと聞きましたが、八重山では相変わらず太陽がジリジリサンサンと降り注ぎ、直射日光下では立っていられない位の暑さです。
暑いからってずっと家に引きこもっているのもなぁと思い、
久しぶりに小浜島に出かけてみることにしました。
小浜島に何があるのかと言われると、特に何もないのですが、出かけると、私はレンタルバイクで島内をぶんぶん走りまわっています。すずし〜い。信号機って1つもないかも？滞在中、1つも信号機を見かけませんでした。
さて、今回はこのレンタルバイクについてお話ししたいと思います。
フェリー乗り場の向かいにレンタルのお店が3軒ほど並んでいます。
扱っているのは
・自転車
・電動アシスト付き自転車
・原付バイク
・125ccの2人乗り用スクーター
・レンタカー
この辺です。
どこのお店にしようか迷いますが
どこも内容はだいたい同じなので
1番空いてるお店をお勧めします〜
というのも、お客さんが多いと
手続きに時間がかかって、乗り始めるまでに少々時間を要するからです。
手続きはの内容は、携帯、電話番号、免許証の番号を控えることと、料金の支払いです。
ですが、
お客さんが多い時は、お客さん全部の手続きを済ませてから、
運転上の注意を説明した後に、乗り出しになりますので
お客さんが多ければ多いほど、出発できるタイミングが遅くなります。
今回私がレンタルしていたお店でも
お店のおじさんが、島内の見どころや運転時の注意を説明しているときに
女性のお客さんが
「早くしてよ！いつ乗れるの？時間の無駄！」
とブチ切れていました。
こわーいw
周りのお客さんも、静まり返り、お店のおじさんの反応を見守っていましたが、
おじさんの落ち着いた対応で事なきをえました、たぶん。
小浜島はそんなに広くないのですぐに島内一周できますが、
アップダウンがけっこうあるので、電動自転車かバイクなど
体力がいらない乗り物をレンタルすることをおすすめします。
今回私がレンタルしたのは125ccの二人乗りができるスクーターです。
馬力もそこそこあるのでスイスイと色んなところに行くことができました。
バイクが盗まれるなんてこともないので、ロックしたり、ヘルメットをシート下に収納したりしなくてOK
都会ではできないゆる〜い時間を楽しむことができます。
ただし路面にギャップがあったり信号機もないので
安全運転には気を配るべきでしょう。
急に穴があってハマって転倒なんてことがないようにしましょう〜
あと、一応念のためサンダルではなくシューズを履いたほうがいいんじゃないかなーと個人的には思います。
やっぱり生足だとちょっとしたことで肉がえぐれちゃいますからね。

I heard that it's already getting cold on the mainland (Honshu) in October, but here in the Yaeyama Islands, the sun is still scorching, and it's so hot that you can't stand it under direct sunlight.
Staying indoors because of the heat all the time doesn't sound like a good idea, so I decided to take a break and visit Kohama Island.
When people ask what's on Kohama Island, there isn't really anything specific to point out, but when you visit, you'll find me zipping around the island on a rented bike. It's so refreshing! I don't think I saw a single traffic light during my stay; there might not even be any on the island.
Now, I'd like to talk about renting these bikes.
There are about three rental shops across from the ferry terminal. They offer:
- Regular bicycles
- Electric-assist bicycles
- Mopeds
- 125cc scooters for two people
- Cars
The options are quite similar at all the shops, so I recommend going to the one with the shortest line. This is because if there are many customers, the process can take a bit longer, and you might have to wait before you can start your ride.
The process involves taking down your mobile phone number, license number, and paying the fee. However, when there are many customers, they finish all the procedures for everyone, then explain the driving instructions, so the more customers there are, the later you'll start.
At the shop where I rented my bike this time, there was a lady who got really upset when the shopkeeper was explaining the island's attractions and safety precautions. She yelled, "Hurry up! When can I go? What a waste of time!" Scary! 😅
The other customers and I fell silent, watching to see how the shopkeeper would react. He handled it calmly, and there were no problems, thankfully.
Kohama Island isn't very large, so you can go around it quickly, but there are quite a few ups and downs on the road. That's why I recommend renting an electric bicycle or a bike rather than something that requires physical effort.
This time, I rented a 125cc scooter that can carry two people. It has a decent amount of horsepower, so I could easily explore various places on the island. There's no risk of having the bike stolen, so you don't need to worry about locking it up or storing the helmet somewhere. It's a different, relaxed pace of life that you can't experience in the city.
However, be cautious while riding because the road can have gaps, and there are no traffic lights. Safety is essential. You wouldn't want to fall into a hole or have an accident. Also, I personally think it's a good idea to wear shoes instead of sandals, just to be on the safe side. Your feet can get scratched easily when they're exposed.
So, if you ever plan to visit Kohama Island, definitely consider renting a bike and taking a leisurely stroll around the island. Enjoy your ride!
